Essential security tips for apartment buildings

Whenever we usually talk about home security, the conversation seems to be focused on people who live in houses. There’s not a lot of information on how people who live in apartment buildings can secure their homes. Just because the home isn’t directly on the floor, doesn’t mean that it’s never going to be broken into. There are lots of ways burglars can get into your apartment, even if you’re on a high floor! The great thing is, securing an apartment building isn’t that different than securing a regular home, there are just a few things you need to keep in mind and your apartment will be safe from intruders!

Essential tips you need to keep in mind when securing your apartment

By following the 6 essential tips we’ve laid out below, you can easily secure your apartment and protect yourself and your belongings from any potential intruders!

  1. Get Renters Insurance Immediately: One of the first things you need to do whether you’re just moving in is to get renters insurance. This is essential because even if you do take all the necessary precautions, it’s always best to make sure you’ve protected yourself as well as you can. Renter’s insurance will make sure that all of your personal belongings are going to be safe just in case something bad does happen. The great thing is that renter’s insurance isn’t super expensive either, so there’s no reason not to get it!
  2. Meet everyone who lives on your floor: Next, you need to familiarize yourself with everyone that lives in your immediate vicinity. This will help you figure out which people are “safe” and which ones you need to be a bit wary of. It’s also good to have one go-to neighbor just in case you ever feel like you’re in danger!
  3. Switch out the locks: Even if your landlord tells you they’ve given you all sets of keys, there’s always a possibility that a previous owner had duplicate keys that they had given to someone else. This will mean that your existing lock is pretty much useless. Before you move in, call over locksmith Chicago or a recommended locksmith in your local area to come and change out your locks for you! The process is pretty quick, and you’ll be able to make sure, 100%, that you’re the only one who’s going to be able to gain access to your home!
  4. Double secure the entry points: Once your locks are in place, the next thing you should do is double secure all the entry points. This is even more important to do if you live alone. Get things like door jammers and window bars, to make sure that even if someone is able to break the lock, they still won’t be able to get inside!
  5. Install cameras: Even if your apartment is on the smaller side, it’s always a great idea to invest in security cameras. Now, this might sound super expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. You can even invest in a portable security camera and move it around the house whenever you want! Even one camera is better than having none!

Invest in a small safe: To ensure that your valuables like important documents, cash, and jewelry, are always going to be safe, even if your home is broken into, get a small safe. These are usually so small that they can be tucked away in a closet or even under your bed! These are not extremely expensive and since they’re almost impossible to break into, the intruder is likely to not waste time trying to break into it, leaving your valuables safe!
